FAQ’s

Is the Buteyko method suitable for anyone?

Anyone can learn how to breathe correctly using the Buteyko Method. Subject to your progress, you’ll find you can practice Buteyko’s method with minor intrusion to your normal routine in the first few weeks. Many people have discovered they can enjoy a new level of health and fitness they had thought impossible. Children can also attend the course, but they must attend with a parent or guardian.

How do we teach the Buteyko Method?

The method is taught by a qualified, certified practitioner in small classes of up to eight over a period of approximately 9-10 hours over three sessions in most cases over two weeks. This enable the practitioner to get feedback and give more personalised advice.  There are cases where one-to-one training are also given or small family groups by special arrangement.

What changes will it make to my life?

Similar to eating the appropriate food and drinks, breathing correctly is essential to good health. Optimising your oxygen and carbon dioxide levels will provide great health benefits. If for example you are an asthmatic, the Buteyko breathing course will give you a better understanding of what causes asthma and how the drugs work, as well as the ability to reduce your dependency on drugs. Many thousands of suffers of respiratory disorders, have experienced remarkable improvement of their condition using this method. Should you following the advice given you, not only will it significantly improve your respiratory condition but other areas of life for example managing stress or anxiety.

What is involved?

Training by Respiro is a 9-10 hour breathing programme scheduled two weeks..  The workshops consist of teaching the Buteyko method, 45 minute sessions supervised breathing exercise sessions and discussion. As part of the programme, attendees receive an extensive training manual and twelve month support by Email or telephone to ensure they become proficient in applying therapy. All persons attending are provided with the knowledge to treat their own asthma attack naturally.

To obtain maximum benefits, it is important that breathing exercises are practiced twice per day for a minimum of four weeks and to adhere to small lifestyle changes which are conducive to promoting good health. This will result in a substantial alleviation of symptoms and improved fitness level. Lifestyle changes and breathing exercises cause minimum disruption to normal day to day activities.

Is the therapy suitable for all asthmatics?

This is a very effective therapy for most asthmatics. It might be less effective for those with brittle asthma since this is largely dependent on their ability to undertake exercises as required in the early weeks of the programme. Buteyko Method has been scientifically evaluated in Russia, Australia, Canada and Egypt to be effective for all asthmatics resulting in a 90% decrease in reliever medication and 49% decrease in steroids. It is our policy to work with each client until they can correctly apply this therapy.

What is your refund guarantee?

Respiro’s guarantee is that if, after six weeks after attending our workshop, you do not experience a significant improvement in your condition, you will be offered a follow-up workshop free of charge. If, after attending this follow-up workshop and practicing the exercises for four weeks, you still fail to experience a significant improvement in your condition, you will receive a full refund of the money you paid.

Are the results of this therapy permanent for asthmatics?

Significant reduction of asthma attacks and the ability to control asthma symptoms can be permanent. Once a patient has reached a control pause of 40 seconds for six continuous months, their symptoms should not return. Occasionally, mild symptoms may return but this is easily reversed very quickly by monitoring your breathing and reviewing your diet.

Are the exercises difficult to perform?

Breathing exercises are simple and easily understood. Some exercises are more suitable for different conditions and severity of illness. The exercises are personalised to each individual.

Do I need to inform my Doctor?

You should inform your doctor of what you are doing so that they will be able to monitor your progress. Some doctors may be unaware of the Buteyko method and therefore might be reluctant to give their consent. We are willing explain or send them appropriate literature upon request.

The Buteyko Method teaches the importance and benefits of breathing naturally through your nose, how to make modifications to lifestyle along with guidelines aimed at encouraging good health. You are advised not to modify your medications without the consent of a GP. Inform your doctor that you are taking the course so that he/she may monitor your progress. Most doctors will be pleased to see that their patients are actively trying to improve their lifestyle and reduce their reliance on prescribed drugs.

Is there any equipment or additional medicine required with the Buteyko Method?

No equipment is required. Respiro workshops teach individuals how to take control of their condition naturally. However there is the option of taking a limited number of herbs to further help some conditions. For snorers there is the option of using anti-snoring devise to aid faster relief.

Can the technique be dangerous?

The programme we teach is completely safe when practiced correctly and clients continue to take their preventer medication as appropriate until advised otherwise by their GP. We work with our clients until they develop a good understanding and are able to apply the method properly.

How long does it take to retrain my breathing?

This is determined by the age and severity of condition of the individual. The more practice undertaken, the sooner breathing will achieve satisfactory levels. Most people start to experience improvements within the first few days of the workshop; however most improvement will be made after a month.  Reduced symptoms for example are easier breathing, improved sleep, reduced mucus, higher energy levels during the day – and usually reduction of the need for relief medication where this is being taken.

What are the conditions of Respiro Health Solutions?

Our clients if taking medication must stay on their prescribed medication. After a number of weeks training with us and after achieving major improvement in symptoms, clients can attend their GP to have a medical assessment and review of medication. All our clients must sign a contract stating that they will not change or alter their medication without first consulting their GP or on the recommendation of a medical doctor. How quickly can I stop using the CPAP machine?

Thousands of people have reduced their need for the CPAP machine after utilising the Buteyko Method. The time it takes will vary among individuals. The more you stick to the programme the faster you will see positive results.

After a number of weeks of applying the Buteyko Method, improvement in your overall health will result in an increase in your Control Pause (a way of measuring the level of success you are achieving). At this stage a programme will be developed for coming off the CPAP in agreement with your doctor’s advice.
